Spanish and Go Founders Jim & May on How to Immerse Yourself in Spanish Anywhere in the World

Jim and May from "Spanish and Go" share their best tips for learning español and their favorite resources for immersing yourself in the language and culture right at home.

In this episode, I chat with Jim and May, the duo behind Spanish and Go. Their journey from a chance meeting on a language exchange site to becoming business partners (and a married couple!) is a masterclass in how to bridge the gap between "studying" Spanish and actually living it.

Whether you are stuck in the "intermediate plateau" or just starting out, their insights offer a roadmap to fluency that goes far beyond the classroom. This isn't just a story about learning a language; it’s a story about how a language can completely rewrite your life.

Key Takeaways

Leverage Cognates for a Quick Win

Jim’s journey started in a self-imposed "cubicle" (a recording studio where he spent all day in front of a computer). Seeking freedom, he turned to Spanish. His secret weapon? A book from the 1950s: Margarita Madrigal’s Magic Key to Learning Spanish.

"You find out within the first 10 minutes that you actually already know hundreds, if not thousands, of Spanish words... it gives you a big win right away."

💡 The Lesson: Don’t start with complex conjugations. Start with "cognates" (words that are similar in both English and Spanish). Building early confidence is the best way to ensure you don’t quit too soon.

Shift from "Learning" to "Connecting"

May’s perspective as a native speaker and teacher highlights another common trap: performance anxiety. Even as an English major in Mexico, she was terrified to speak. That all changed when she was dropped into an immersion environment in Canada where she had to use the language to survive.

💡 The Lesson: This doesn't mean you have to move abroad to practice speaking. But it does mean that you need a strong "why" for learning, and opportunities to connect and practice with real people (e.g. with an italki tutor).

Stick With One Dialect at First

One of the most common questions for Spanish learners is: Which version of Spanish should I learn? With over 20 countries speaking the language, the variations in slang and accent can be dizzying. Jim and May's advice? Stick with one (e.g., Mexican, Colombian, or Peninsular) until you reach an intermediate level. Then branch out as your interests and travels dictate.

"Guilty Pleasures" Can Be the Best Resources

Jim credits his advanced understanding of Puerto Rican slang to an unlikely source: Bad Bunny. While pop music and reggaeton might be "guilty pleasures" for some, they can actually be cultural and linguistic goldmines. Instead of the stale sentences in textbooks, you can learn the authentic, vibrant, ever-evolving flavor of Spanish used by real people.

Avoid the Sunk Cost Fallacy

If a method isn't working—if that textbook is boring or you don't "click" with your tutor—let it go. Language learning is like dating; you might have to go through five or six "exchanges" before you find someone you is easy to communicate with and makes the language come alive for you.
