8 Ways to Boost Your Mandarin Chinese Listening & Speaking Skills with Apple Siri
- John Fotheringham
- Chinese, Tips & Tools
With its four tones, new sounds, and similar syllables, learning to pronounce Mandarin Chinese correctly can be a challenging feat. Fortunately, iPhone users have a powerful pronunciation tool built right in: Siri!
While Apple's popular AI assistant is usually used for hands-free convenience, you can also use it to practice Chinese in a free, low-stakes way!
By switching Siri to Mandarin, you unlock the ability to:
Listen to native speech.
Mimic sounds, tones, and phrases.
Practice producing spoken Mandarin.
Get instant feedback on your accuracy.
All of this helps you hone both your listening and speaking skills, which are essential, foundational aspects of mastering Mandarin that many learners avoid.
Here’s how to turn Siri into your dream language tutor.
① Change Siri to Mandarin Chinese
The first step is to change Siri’s input language to Mandarin so that it's not expecting English. This creates a Chinese immersion environment every time you interact with Siri!
Here's how to change Siri’s language to Mandarin Chinese on iOS:
Open Settings on your iPhone (the app with the gray gears).
Scroll down and tap on Siri.
Tap Language.
Choose either Chinese (Mandarin - China mainland) or Chinese (Mandarin - Taiwan).
② Get Siri's Attention
In Mandarin, you get Siri's attention by saying:
嘿 Siri
Hēi Siri.
"Hey Siri."
You can also just hold down the button on the right side of your iPhone for a few seconds to bring up Siri.
③ Ask Siri Simple Questions in Mandarin
Once Siri is set to Mandarin, start interacting by asking simple questions in the language. This helps you practice your speaking, vocabulary, and grammar, and also provides a chance to immerse in accurate pronunciation, natural sentence patterns, and common words when you listen to Siri's responses to your queries.
For example, you can try asking things like:
天氣怎麼樣?
天气怎么样?
Tiān-qì zěn-me-yàng?
"How’s the weather?"
今天幾號?
今天几号?
Jīn-tiān jǐ hào?
"What’s today’s date?"
現在幾點了?
现在几点了?
Xiàn-zài jǐ diǎn le?
"What time is it now? / What's the time?"
我把車停在哪裡?
我把车停在哪里?
Wǒ bǎ chē tíng zài nǎ-lǐ?
"Where did I park my car"
四分之一杯是幾大匙?
四分之一杯是几大匙?
Sì fēn zhī yī bēi shì jǐ dà shi?
"How many tablespoons are in ¼ cup?"
這首歌是誰唱的?
这首歌是谁唱的?
Zhè shǒu-gē shì shéi chàng de?
"Who sings this song?"
Or you can ask Siri the ultimate meta question about questions!
我可以問你什麼?
我可以问你什么?
Wǒ kě-yǐ wèn nǐ shén-me?
"What can I ask you?"
④ Make Requests & Give Commands in Mandarin
You can also make requests, set reminders, and ask Siri to complete various tasks on your iPhone.
For example, you can say:
設定早上 6 點的鬧鐘。
设定早上 6 点的闹钟。
Shè-dìng zǎo-shang liù-diǎn de nào-zhōng.
"Set an alarm for 6 a.m."
提醒我回家時幫植物澆水。
提醒我回家时帮植物浇水。
Tí-xǐng wǒ huí-jiā shí bāng zhí-wù jiāo-shuǐ.
"Remind me to water the plants when I get home."
打開語音備忘錄。
打开语音备忘录。
Dǎ-kāi yǔ-yīn bèi-wàng-lù.
"Open Voice Memos."
快進 30 秒。
快进 30 秒。
Kuài-jìn sān-shí miǎo.
"Fast forward 30 seconds."
兩倍速播放這個播客。

Liǎng-bèi sù bò-fàng zhè-ge bò-kè.
"Play this podcast at double speed."
⑤ Use Dictation to Practice Speaking
Siri’s dictation feature not only provides a convenient way to write hands-free, but it also provides a way to practice speaking and get instant feedback on the accuracy of your pronunciation.
When you dictate in Mandarin, Siri tries to interpret what you say and convert it into text. If your pronunciation is accurate, you will see the correct words written out. If not, you'll know which words need more practice.
Here's how to use dictation:
Open Apple Notes, Messages, HelloTalk, etc.
Switch to a Chinese keyboard (learn how to add a keyboard here if needed).
Tap the microphone icon in the lower-right corner below the keyboard.
Start speaking in Mandarin (Siri will start transcribing what you say).
Check if the correct Chinese words are displayed on screen.
⑥ Use Siri to Learn New Vocabulary
You can also ask Siri to define Chinese words or translate between Mandarin and English. This is a great way to pick up new vocabulary while see how terms are used in context.
For example, you can try asking the following language questions:
.... 用中文怎麼說?
... 用中文怎么说?
... yòng zhōng-wén zěn-me shuō?
"How do you say ... in Chinese?"
... 是什麼意思?
... 是什么意思?
... shì shén-me yì-si?
"What does ... mean?
⑦ Practice Tone Accuracy with Siri
Mastering Mandarin tones is crucial for clear communication and accurate speech-to-text. If Siri misunderstands your input, it’s often due to incorrect tones. While this can be frustrating, see it as an opportunity to immediate feedback and perfect your pronunciation.
For instance, there is an important tonal difference between the following pair of words:
哪裡
哪里
nǎ-lǐ
"where"
那裡
那里
nà-lǐ
"there"
The word for "where?" uses a third tone and has a little mouth radical on the left side of the character (口), while the word for "there" uses a fourth tone and lacks the mouth radical. You can instantly see if you use the correct one based on what Siri hears.
⑧ Create Daily Mandarin Challenges with Siri
To help you stay more consistent with your Mandarin immersion, ask Siri to set up daily challenges using Reminders or Apple Calendar.
For example:
提醒我每天下午3點學習中文。
提醒我每天下午3点学习中文。
Tí-xǐng wǒ měi-tiān xià-wǔ sān-diǎn xué-xí zhōng-wén.
"Remind me to study Chinese at 3 p.m. every day."
This also helps you practice using time expressions in Mandarin, which have rigid rules about order in the sentence (usually Subject + Time + Verb + Object).
Apple’s Siri is more than just a virtual assistant; if used right, it can become a powerful Chinese language-learning tool. Interacting with Siri in Mandarin helps you fine-tune your pronunciation, pick up new vocabulary, and immerse yourself more deeply in the language on a daily basis. Best of all, such practice fits seamlessly into your routine, turning everyday tasks into valuable learning opportunities. So grab your iPhone, change the settings, and start saying "嘿 Siri!"
