How to Boost Your Chinese Vocabulary & Fluency Through Daily Journaling

- Chinese, Tips & Tools
Journaling in Chinese offers language learners numerous benefits: it helps expand your vocabulary, provides a meaningful context to practice grammar, and identifies holes in your writing skills.
But journaling also has the added benefit of fostering personal reflection, self-expression, and gratitude. And there's no better way to capture your life and track your progress over time.
Why Learn Chinese Through Journaling?
Here are five big benefits of keeping a daily journal in Chinese:
① Journaling Actives & Reinforces Your Learning
Journaling forces you to actively recall and use the vocabulary and grammar structures you've learned. Unlike passive activities like listening or reading, writing requires you to produce language. This may be more difficult, but there is no better way activate your knowledge and reinforce your learning.
② Journaling Personalizes Your Learning
When you journal, you write about topics that matter most to you—your daily life, your thoughts, your dreams, your goals, and your fears. This personalization makes the activity more relevant and engaging, which in turn increases motivation and retention.
③ Journaling Improves Your Writing Skills
With thousands of characters and words to learn, Chinese writing requires extensive and consistent practice. Journaling allows you to repeatedly use characters in context, which solidifies your understanding and helps you remember their meanings, pronunciations, and stroke orders (if writing by hand).
④ Journaling Makes You More Mindful
Journaling is a reflective practice. As you write, you're not only improving your Chinese but also processing your experiences, thoughts, and emotions. Mindfulness practices like this can reduce stress, improve mental clarity, and help quiet the "monkey mind" that so often dominates our days. 🙊
⑤ Track Your Progress
Journaling in Chinese every day creates a valuable record of your language learning journey. As you look back at your earlier entries, you will be able to spot patterns in your mistakes, remember useful words and phrases you may have forgotten, and see how much you've improved over time. All of which can be incredibly motivating.
How to Start Learning Chinese Through Journaling
To kick off your Chinese journaling habit, you really only need three things:
a pen
some paper
a little time
But here are some additional tips and tools to help you create a sustainable and enjoyable journaling habit.
Set Clear Goals
Before you start, take a moment to set some "S.M.A.R.T." journaling goals. In case you're not familiar with this acronym, it stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. To be effective, you want to make sure that your goals hit all five of these criteria.
For example, you might aim to write at least 500 words every day, capturing your top three tasks for the day and what you're grateful for first thing in the morning, and then the top three highlights of the day in the evening before bed. Having explicit journaling goals provides structure and direction, and helps keep you more consistent.
Start Simple
If you're a beginner, start with simple sentences and familiar vocabulary. Don't worry about mistakes at this stage; just focus on getting your thoughts down on paper. As you progress, gradually introduce more complex grammar structures and more advanced vocabulary.
Leverage a Bilingual Approach if Necessary
In the beginning, it's totally okay to might mix Chinese with your native language. For example, you could write a sentence with a few Chinese words you know, but fill in unknown words in English. Just make sure to later fill in these gaps with a good dictionary or with help from a Chinese friend or tutor (more on this below).
Practice Using New Words & Structures
As you encounter new vocabulary and grammar in your Anywhere Immersion activities (e.g. watching Chinese shows on Netflix), try to use these words and structures in your daily journal entries. This helps create stronger memories, reinforces your knowledge, and trains you how to use the terms in context.
Use a Good Dictionary
If you haven't already, download the Pleco dictionary app on your phone. This is hands down the best dictionary app for Chinese learners. I also recommend installing the Zhongwen pop-up dictionary extension on Chrome, DeepL for translation, and ChatGPT for AI-powered language questions and grammar checks.

Overcome Writer's Block with Prompts
Do you find a blank page intimidating? Do you struggle with what to write about? You're definitely not alone! The good news is that there are a number of useful journal prompts that can provide useful creative constraints and jumping off points to get started. I especially like the prompts in The 5-Minute Journal:
First thing in the morning, complete the following three prompts:
I am grateful for [choose 3 things]…
What would make my day great?
Daily Affirmation: I am…
Then in the evening, complete the following two prompts:
3 amazing things that happened today...
How could I have made today even better?
Get Your Writing Corrected
While the act of writing your journal will help your Chinese in and of itself, you will get the most benefit if you get your mistakes corrected. You can certainly use ChatGPT for this, but an online Chinese tutor can provide more personalized feedback on your writing, catch more errors, and tell you what doesn't sound natural.
💡 Pro Tip: There are many places to find Chinese tutors and exchange partners online, but I personally recommend italki. They have a large number of high-quality tutors, including both professional teachers and low-cost community tutors. While a pro can explain why something is wrong, any native speaker can tell you what is incorrect.
Review Your Entries on a Regular Basis
To get even more benefit from your Chinese journal, try to quickly read over your past entries at regular intervals. This will help you identify patterns in your mistakes, monitor your progress, and savor past memories. It can also be a great confidence booster to see how far you've come!
💡 Pro Tip: I suggest using the Day One app (iOS, macOS, Android, web) since it has a built-in "On this Day" view that shows all entries from that date in years past. After I write my daily journal entry, I love reading through these entries, seeing photos of past adventures, and seeing how my language skills have improved over time.
Make Journaling Fun!
Most importantly, make sure that your journaling practice is something you actually enjoy. If you see journaling as a chore that you have to do, you probably won't stick with it very long. Instead, frame the habit as a privilege you get to do. Write about topics that light you up, explore whacky ideas, and play with the language.
Journaling in Chinese is a powerful tool that combines language learning with personal reflection. It's an approach that grows with you, adapting to your increasing proficiency and helping you make the language your own.
By setting clear goals, starting simple, and peppering in new words and grammar, you'll gradually build your writing skills and deepen your understanding of Chinese.
Plus, the habit offers the added benefits of mindfulness and self-awareness, making your language learning journey both productive and fulfilling. So grab a notebook, start writing, and watch your Chinese skills flourish!
